Second Annual U.S. Championship in
“Masskrugstemmen”
(Stein Holding)

“Masskrugstemmen,” which translates loosely to the lifting of a liter mug of beer, is a well-known and a competitive Bavarian sport. The “Masskrug,” a 1 Liter Stein is held with one arm, completely stretched out and parallel to the floor. The goal is simple:

To hold a filled stein as long as possible!

But, for those of you who have done it, you know it sounds much easier than it is!

If you’ve ever had dreams of taking your stein holding skills to the next level, here’s your chance! For the second time in history, there will be a “Masskrugstemmen” U.S. Championship, and the American German Club of the Palm Beaches has been selected as the regional qualification headquarters!

So, we challenge you to come to the American German Club of the Palm Beaches where we’ll be holding contests on the following dates:

Regional Qualification:

• Saturday, March 27, 2010 starting at 9:00 pm
• Saturday, April 24, 2010 starting at 9:00 pm
• Saturday, June 26, 2010 starting at 9:00 pm

Regional Finals:

• Saturday, August 14, 2010 starting at 9:00 pm

“MASSKRUGSTEMMEN”

At each event the longest stein holding time will be recorded and the top 5 qualifiers in each of the 3 qualifying rounds will compete for the regional title in the final on Saturday, August 14th at 9:00 pm. Contestants are encouraged to come back and try to beat the winning time each month.

On August 14, the winner of the Regional Finals will win a trip to New York City (including round-trip airfare and hotel accommodation) to represent the American German Club of the Palm Beaches in the National Championship.

The National Championship in New York will consist of each regional winner from around the country and will be held at the “German-American Friendship Party” following the 53nd German-American Steuben Parade on Saturday, September 25th on Stage in Central Park. Approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend!

But, that’s not the best part. The winner of the finals will be named “U.S. Champion in Masskrugstemmen” and will receive a trip for two to Munich, Germany, to visit the original Hofbräuhaus. The international trip will include round-trip airfare, hotel accommodation, and guided-tour at the Hofbräu brewery and dinner at the Hofbräuhaus.

With a trip to New York and a trip to Germany on the line, “Masskrugstemmen” is one competition that could really pay off!

We’ll see you and your friends at the American German Club of the Palm Beaches.

Hofbräu is the official beer of the U.S. Championship in “Masskrugstemmen”. Hofbräu,  probably the most traditional German Beer, is served every day in the world-famous Hofbräuhaus in Munich and in selected restaurants and bars across the United States and the entire world, will be on tap at the American-German Club of the Palm Beaches  during the “Masskrugstemmen” Championship events, Spring Festival and Oktoberfest 2010.

“MASSKRUGSTEMMEN” - STEIN HOLDING CONTEST RULES AND REGULATIONS:
To participate in the “Masskrugstemmen” you must be able to hold “The Masskrug,” a filled 1 liter stein to be held with one arm (left or right), stretched out in front of the body (not sideways!), and completely parallel to the floor. If the arm holding the Masskrug is not absolutely parallel to the floor, the contestant gets a warning – after one warning follows disqualification. The regional winner of the American German Club of the Palm Beaches will be competing in the finals in New York for the title of “U.S. champion in “Masskrugstemmen.”

The regional winner must be available for media interviews before and after the finals. The German-American Steuben Parade Committee will organize and hold the finals of the U.S. Championship in “Masskrugstemmen” on Saturday, September 18th, 2010 at approximately 4 pm on stage at Rumsey’s Playfield in Central Park in New York City as part of the German-American Friendship Party. Two judges will preside over the finals.

• “Masskrugstemmen” is NOT a drinking game. The competition is about holding a filled 1 liter mug on an outstretched arm in compliance with the rules set by the organizers.

• The American German Club of the Palm Beaches cannot be held responsible for any injuries that occur in connection with the competition.
• The American German Club of the Palm Beaches does not encourage drinking. Even though “Masskrugstemmen“ involves a filled 1 liter mug, The American German Club of the Palm Beaches strongly encourages all contestants and the audience to drink safely and responsibly and not to drive or operate machinery when under the influence of alcohol.

EVERY CONTESTANT HEREBY AGREES THAT HE OR SHE IS PARTICIPATING IN THIS ACTIVITY WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT IT COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND SPECIFICALLY ABSOLVESTHE AMERICAN-GERMANC CLUB OF THE PALM BEACHES FROM ANY LIABILITY FROM THE PARTICIPATION IN THIS ACTIVITY.
